Managing Editor

The Managing Editor establishes, budgets, and oversees a digital-first content management workflow in support of all For Construction Pros brands and project efforts so that editors may focus more on content creation. This role will be heavily focused on increasing the efficiency of the editorial process and ensuring no potential traffic is left on the table.

You are a fit for this role if you can build industry relationships, create engaging content, and understand the audience data in order to adapt to their response. You should have experience interviewing high profile industry sources and writing articles that keep best web writing practices in mind and are written in a way that drives readership and engagement. You will strategize with editors of other brands to maximize editorial efforts.

Job Results/Outcomes

  1. Create a master digital content budget in the form of a monthly calendar.

    • This budget will dictate when and where content is published.

    • As owner of the budget, Managing Editor (ME) is responsible for the actual distribution of content, relieving editorial staff of this duty.

    • Will be in charge of publishing all content in Base and scheduling to the appropriate newsletters.

  2. Create engaging headlines and provide thorough copy editing.

    • ME will work with editors and the copy to create headlines that incorporate best practices around increasing engagement and SEO.

    • Will edit copy according to the AP Style Guide to ensure a consistent reading experience.

    • Will keep track of story threads and ensure that back links are provided to relevant content.

  3. Send all newsletters from brands feeding content into For Construction Pros (FCP).

    • Create and A/B test engaging subject lines.

    • Measure newsletter performance

    • Work with editors to craft content lineups for each newsletter to ensure that interesting and relevant content is available throughout each send.

    • With content budgeting and newsletter scheduling off their plates, other editors will be able to focus more time on content creation instead of content distribution.

  4. Ensure websites and print contain fresh content, including written, audio, video, and visual.

    • Will be responsible for rotating in and out new content and engaging photography on the homepage and category/brand pages to ensure that the site always looks fresh and has something new to offer.

    • This includes developing a consistent visual format for articles.

    • Will collaborate with sales and editors to identify new content opportunities.

    • Stay abreast of industry news and events

  5. Measure site performance and content metrics

    • Will use Parse.ly and Google Analytics to maintain and comprehensive understanding of what content works well and what content does not.

    • Will be able to communicate this information to both editors and content management through regular reporting.

  6. Work with social media expert to ensure social media channels of FCP and its associated brands are engaging, increase audience, and provide a platform for further monetization

    • Craft headlines and edit copy with social opportunities in mind.

    • Create engaging posts regularly to check in with audience, drive interest, and encourage others to follow

    • Build audience following to increase opportunities for the sales team to sell against

    • Keep up with any new platform changes or algorithms to ensure efficiency of posting 

  7. Other duties as assigned are achieved in helping the brand(s) meet revenue goal(s)

    • Acting as a point person for content uploads during trade shows

    • Assist content management team in rolling out editorial initiatives and ensuring efficient performance of editorial processes.

    • Thought leader within ACBM on engagement and content distribution strategy

    • Participate in teams and company meetings

    • Engage in client networking and building relationships

    • Collaborate with sales, PSMs, and designers to accomplish client or sales efforts projects

    • Provides backup to editors in order to relieve some of the workload pressure on the senior editors

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Bachelor’s Degree plus one year managing a brand, program, or event, or four years of experience writing articles and/or news, as well as basic editing or equivalent higher education, plus one year managing a brand, program, or event

  • Passionate, articulate, positive, and highly motivated to win
